Course content
12. What is theater in culture and how do we study it: theater as metaphor and cultural model (Plato, theatrum mundi, E. Goffman, society of the spectacle). 34. Theater, ritual, and power: the Great Dionysia, royal coronations, theater censorship, the second theater reform. 5.6. Decolonization and intercultural exchange in theater and performance culture: depicting the Other in pre-modern theater (Elizabethan drama, Baroque spectacles), Shakespeare and ancient tragedy in Yukio Ninagawa's productions. 78. Role, mask, costume, and subversion in theatrical and cultural performances: Roman pallia, festivals of fools, kyogen. 910. Theater in the era of posthumanism: (anthropological machine) in performance, non-human agency (puppet and object theater, Rimini Protokoll). 1112. Applied theater: playback theater, drama therapy, theater of the oppressed, museum theater.

Learning outcomes
The course will introduce students to the relationship between theatrical and cultural performances and social, political, and cultural developments from the beginning of Euro-American cultural history to the present day.
After completing the course, students will know what theater is in culture and how we study it, understand the concepts of ritual and power in relation to theater and performance culture, describe the mechanisms of decolonization and intercultural exchange in theater and performance culture, concepts of role, mask, costume, and subversion in theatrical and cultural performances and applied theater, and explain how theater operates in the era of posthumanism.
