Course content
|
1. Relationship of common nouns and proper nouns in the language. 2. First (given) name in Czech, their origin, dialect and homely appearance (hypocoristics). 3. Surname (family name) in Czech, their origin and dialectal features. 4. Personal names in original and translated literature. Bible onomastics. 5. Place-names in Czech, their origin and species. Exonyma in English. 6. Minor place-names in Czech, their current research.

Learning outcomes
|
The seminar is focused on proper names and their position in language.
Students will learn the basic categories of proper names in Czech language (anthroponyms, toponyms, chrématonyma), their formal aspects of the functioning of the communication, the nature of proper names compared with the common nouns, current methods of examining their own names following the tradition of Czech Onomastics.

Prerequisites
|
Basic orientation in grammatical and lexical system of contemporary Czech and knowledge of contemporary Czech grammatical descriptions.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance
Steady periodic participation in the seminars. Provision and preparation of the assigned texts. Each student in each seminar is prepared either individually interpret given examples. (Texts will be available in printed and electronic form. Assumed that registered suits the way you work.) Essay and a short essay about it.
